Fuerteventura Holidays

Calete de Fuste:

Caleta de Fuste, on the eastern coast of Fuerteventura, is one of the Island's best known resorts and an ideal place for a family holiday. A quiet and relaxing resort just 10 km from the airport, Caleta de Fuste (also known as Castillo) offers a great beach, extensive sporting facilities and a wide choice of bars and restaurants, and its central location makes it ideally placed for exploring the rest of the island.

Holidays in Caleta de Fuste are mainly focused around the wonderful sandy beach. The horseshoe shaped bay is covered with imported golden sand, and, with the beach protected by breakwaters, the calm shallow waters provide safe sheltered conditions to both paddle and swim in. The water shelves gently into the sea, and there are plenty of rockpools to keep children busy. There is one main street in Caleta de Fuste, a long palm-tree lined stretch, full of bars and restaurants, and the resort is home to a good choice of low-rise hotels and apartments to suit all budgets. Caleta de Fuste has been steadily growing in recent years to cope with the increasing number of visitors, and the resort has seen a fair amount of expansion, with new developments a regular feature. Caleta de Fuste now boasts a new 18-hole golf course, and a brand new shopping centre complete with a large cinema and a bowling alley.

Coralejo:

Corralejo, situated on the north coast of Fuerteventura, is the main tourist resort on the island, attracting many with its great beaches, year-round sun, lively atmosphere and beautiful surrounding countryside. Originally a sleepy fishing village, Corralejo has seen plenty of development throughout the years, yet has still managed to retain its charm and authenticity as a harbour town, making it a hugely popular destination.

Corralejo is home to a town beach right next to the central promenade, a small sheltered spot with golden sands, ideally placed right next to all the waterfront bars and restaurants. Many tourists, however, head straight for Grandes Playas, just 3km away from Corralejo, a glorious white sandy beach, with crystal clear waters, stretching for 10km along secluded sand dunes. This area is now a protected nature reserve, and a great place for some undisturbed sunbathing. Corralejo is home to a wealth of shops, with the main street selling a wide range of goods, and the many original waterfront buildings now housing quaint bars, restaurants and cafes. The harbour at Corralejo is the bustling hub of the resort, with ferries constantly departing and arriving with boatloads of tourists, making the trip up and down the coastline, with one of the most popular routes being the 45 minute journey across to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote.

Costa Caleta:

Costa Caleta is the perfect family resort on the beautiful holiday island of Fuerteventura. You will find this idyllic Canary Island spot on the east coast of the island, situated a mere 7 kilometres from Fuerteventura airport and 12 kilometres south of the Island's capital Puerto Del Rosario. Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Spanish Canary Islands, lying south west of Lanzarote. It is 1,730 sq km in size, offering visitors a mountainous interior rising to 2,648 m and striking volcanic scenery to explore by hire car. Of course if its rest and relaxation you are after, the sun-drenched island is blessed with many sheltered, sandy beaches. Costa Caleta, a purpose-build beach resort, has developed a reputation as a family-friendly place to stay, but its many bars and restaurants, and the odd lively night spot, make it perfect for couples too.

The town of Costa Caleta is also know by locals as Caleta de Fuste, which means cove of the fishing boat, or El Castillo de Fuste, referring to the nearby 18th century watchtower which looks down on the harbour. A resort has flourished here thanks to the pretty horseshoe-shaped cove providing holiday-makers with a safe, sheltered place to swim. Families are also drawn to the smart, clean and relatively new apartment developments that have grown up in recent years, supported by restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The atmosphere is one of family-friendly fun and relaxation. If you enjoy hunting for bargains on your way back from the beach, Costa Caleta's shopping village can be found at P ueblo Majorero, the central plaza, just back from the beach. There is also a harbour and marina to explore.

Costa Calma:

Costa Calma, situated on the south coast of Fuerteventura on the Jandia peninsula, is a quiet resort, set amongst some stunningly beautiful surroundings. This purpose-built resort is relatively new to tourism, established when a major road was built in the mid 80's, providing access to the area and linking it with the north of the island. Costa Calma sees some strong off-shore winds during the summer months, and is therefore a haven for windsurfers, who flock to Fuerteventura for its ideal conditions. A favourite with German holidaymakers, Costa Calma is a perfect resort for those in search of seclusion and relaxation, and is popular with couples, especially honeymooners.

The Jandia peninsula on the southern tip of Fuerteventura is a protected nature park and a haven for wildlife and plants. It is also home to a seemingly endless stretch of glorious white sandy beaches, considered by some to be the best in the Canaries which, even during high season, never seem to get crowded. The main beach of Costa Calma is Playa de Sotavento, with fine white sand gently shelving into the calm waters of the Atlantic, great for swimming in, and with a small number of facilities including sunbeds and umbrellas. Costa Calma has a good selection of hotels and apartments spread throughout the resort, with the smarter ones having prime location near the beach, and various convenient shopping centres for those holiday essentials and souvenirs.

Playa Barca:

The resort of Playa Barca benefits from its prime position on a 30 km sweep of golden shoreline in the southern region of Fuerteventura. It is considered one of the most unspoilt spots of the Canary Islands. Playa Barca is ideally located for families and couples seeking sun, golden sands and Sangria, enhanced by a beautiful backdrop of spectacular scenery. Local hotels and apartments offer excellent accommodation at Playa Barca, while restaurants are plentiful and there are several neighbouring towns and beauty spots worth visiting while on your holidays. There is ample evening entertainment, mostly provided by the hotels, and if you enjoy dancing, let you hair down here, or in neighbouring towns Jandia (10 km away) or Costa Calma (4 km away). Windsurfing enthusiasts will enjoy holidays at Playa Barca where warm Saharan winds, and clear blue waters provide the best conditions for learning, improving or really stretching your windsurfing skills.

Holidays in Playa Barca offer you far more than just a relaxing, sunny beach base. Playa Barca beach is sheltered and well supported with facilities, particularly for those who fancy trying their hand at windsurfing or scuba diving. You will find golden sands and an azure sea here, but there is so much more to fill your time if you venture beyond the friendly resort. The southern tip of Fuerteventura is known as the Jandia Peninsula, and here you will find the spotless white sand dunes of Corralejo National Park. It has been popular with naturists for many years who say the seclusion and natural beauty of the area is hard to beat. From Playa Barca, you might want to take a camel safari trip into the more mountainous interior terrain, explore Fuerteventura's many tiny villages by hire car, or embark on a Catamaran cruise to neighbouring Canary Islands - the volcanic island of Lanzarote is very close.

Playa Jandia:

The Jandia peninsula, on the southern end of Fuerteventura, is a beautiful part of the island, ideal for couples, especially honeymooners, and families looking for a quiet relaxing destination. Separated from the rest of the island, the Jandia peninsula is a nature reserve bordered by an endless stretch of white sand dunes, and home to the tourist resorts of Costa Calma and Morra Jable. The Jandia area is renowned as having the best beaches on the entire island, and is a perfect spot for windsurfing. Since the introduction of a major motorway over the last few years, making the area much more accessible, the Jandia area has developed dramatically, and now offers large hotels and resort facilities to cater for the influx of tourists

The white sandy beach at Jandia stretches along the coastline for 20 km, and at some places is almost a kilometer wide. Surrounded by rolling sand dunes and lagoons, the area is stunning, and home to a variety of protected wildlife and plants. The most popular resort in Jandia is Costa Calma, a favourite with German tourists, on the Playa de Sotavento, where the sand gently shelves into the Atlantic, and conditions are perfect for swimming. The resort is spread out along the coast, and offers a wide selection of large hotels with good facilities. Further south is the port of Morro Jable, a once tiny fishing village and now an up-and-coming tourist resort. A promenade lined with shops, bars and cafes makes up the main part of town, and accommodation varies from charming lodges to elegant luxury hotels. The beach at Morro Jable is Playa del Matorral, a long stretch of white sands, and a prominent lighthouse, once used for shipping, now signifies the start of the nudist section of the beach. Smaller beaches along the coastline are much wilder and less accessible, but can be reached in a 4 wheel drive car or jeep.

Quiet and relaxing, Jandia attracts those looking for some peace and tranquility, amidst some simply stunning scenery. There are a number of bars and restaurants in each resort, and the nightlife tends to centre around the hotels. Jandia, the venue for the annual World Windsurfing Championships, is a perfect spot not only for windsurfing, but water-skiing, kite-surfing and scuba-diving.
